Voting is on for the Ocean Action Project 2013 and we need your vote for The Great Fiji Shark Count! Projects will be chosen by the Project AWARE community through a voting system via Facebook.

Now we need our supporters and community cast their vote for The Great Fiji Shark Count this November.

The search is on. Project AWARE Foundation is looking for innovative and results-driven projects to address two key focus areas: tackling marine debris problems and protecting critical shark and ray species.

With increasing threats facing our ocean planet, working globally and acting locally has never been so important. To empower ocean communities to take local conservation actions to a whole new level of change, Project AWARE’s Ocean Action Project 2013 is now open for voting.

The Ocean Action Project supports local ocean conservation initiatives that bring us a step closer to a clean, healthy and abundant ocean planet.

Project AWARE Foundation is interested in supporting work that is action-oriented and strategically addresses root causes of marine debris or shark and ray protection issues. These projects should be measurable, with an approach for change.

Now we need our supporters and community cast their votes for The Great Fiji Shark Count this November.

Fiji is world renowned for having some of the most friendliest and welcoming people on earth. It’s a culture that lives the word, bula, which literally means life, but is used as a common greeting expressing a feeling of sincere welcome. It’s a place that you could leave your kids at the local village for the day and know they’ll be well taken care of. It’s also romantic and full of exotic tropical adventure. And, underwater, it’s a place that explodes with color, especially of the soft coral variety, which gives Fiji its nickname as the soft coral capital of the world.

But, you might miss the multihued forests while distracted by such cool marine life as blue ribbon eels, sea turtles, tridacna clams and clouds of anthias. Most of the sites feel the rush of current, which keeps the soft corals nice and plump.

Above the water, you’ll want to end each day as the Fijians do, around the ceremonial kava bowl, a drink that has a great relaxing effect that will ensure each day ends with a smile. Bula!

Goodbye Air Pacific . . . Hello "Fiji Airways"

Yes, officially on June 27th in Fiji. It is exciting that after a 15-month journey, we can now be known as Fiji Airways across the globe.

The changeover represents an exciting future for the airline that is rooted in more than a 60-year history and service to the people  of "Fiji".

• July 1st will commence the first commercial flight from LAX to NAN (Fiji). 
• Fiji Airways will increase service from four weekly to six services weekly.  Three services on the A330-200 and three on the B747-400.  

In November Fiji Airways will receive the 3rd and final delivery of our A330-200 fleet.

By the end of the year the B747-400 will be retired and the service will increase to daily out of LAX with the A330-200.

“The official changeover date marks the official end of Air Pacific and the beginning of Fiji Airways. It is exciting that after a 15-month journey, we can now be known as ‘Fiji Airways’ across the globe. The changeover represents an exciting future for the airline that is rooted in our more than 60-year history and service to the people of Fiji”, said Aubrey Swift, the airline’s Acting CEO.

“At the heart of our airline’s new name and brand is the Fiji Airways’ brandmark, a striking new Masi design, created by celebrated local Fijian Masi artist, Makereta Matemosi. The brandmark symbolises the airline’s new identity and epitomises all that Fiji Airways represents. It is authentic, distinctive, and true to the airline’s Fijian roots. Fiji Airways will continue to be the country’s flying ambassador to the world, bringing the renowned Fijian hospitality to people across the globe.”

The changeover underscores the success of the airline’s turnaround plan, which started in 2010 and has culminated in reversing record losses and significantly growing passengers and revenue without increasing the size of the carrier’s fleet.

Schedule, product and service enhancements will be rolled out through the rest of 2013, along with the delivery of the third Fiji Airways A330 (and the retirement of the 747s). Thus, by the end of the year, the turnaround and brand transition will be complete.

Shark diving help lures tourists: Gow

Speaking at the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association’s Dive Expo in the Mamanuca Islands yesterday, chair of the Dive Committee Stuart Gow said the thrill of this activity has helped spread the tourism dollar over the country by divers wanting to experience a variety of diving activities."

Fiji Airways – Look to the sky and say ‘BULA’!

The first A330 arrives home here in Fiji TODAY and before touch-down, will do a fly-by over certain locations in Fiji (take a look at the fly-by scheduled route below) – so look up to the sky as soon as you hear a plane overhead  and join us in shouting ‘BULA’ to welcome her home.

Flying under a new name and with a new brandmark, the new A330s represent the first aircraft designed exclusively for Fiji and Fiji’s national airline.

The aircraft began her inaugural journey from the Airbus’ manufacturing centre in Toulouse, France. Pausing briefly in Hong Kong, she will arrive at Nadi International Airport to a crowd of people eagerly waiting to see her touch down.

Air Pacific is rebranding and re-launching as Fiji Airways, which sees the airline return to its 1951 name of ‘Fiji Airways’.

‘We are delighted that the Airbus A330 was chosen as the “canvas” on which to launch the airline’s new brand ‘Fiji Airways’, said John Leahy, Airbus’ Chief Operating Officer – Customers. The A330s will feature comfortable seats with excellent legroom and in seat power and entertainment in Pacific Voyager/economy, and TV size entertainment screens and angled lay flat beds in Tabua/Business Class, proudly representing FIJI in the high end arena alongside the other big name international airline’s.

Five species of highly traded sharks, both manta rays and one species of sawfish were listed under CITES at the conclusion of CoP16 held this month in Bangkok, Thailand. Delegates from 170 countries considered 70 proposals affecting more than 300 species, including eight of some of the most vulnerable sharks and manta rays.
